Hygiene Promoter

Kandahar Refugee Organization (KRO) is a national-level, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization working for humanitarian and rehabilitation roots in Afghanistan. Further, KRO is an Afghan organization that is committed to the development of the local economy and building local capacity for sustainable development. Thus, we have an established specialized network in many provinces of the country in order to design and implement related activities in the field of food security, research, capacity building, disaster management, and placement.

The Hygiene Promoter will work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and support the implementation of WASH activities in targeted communities. The position will facilitate community mobilization, hygiene promotion, awareness sessions, and community participation in activities related to safe water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.

The Hygiene Promoter will engage with community members, local leaders, and vulnerable groups to promote good hygiene and sanitation practices, collect community feedback, support beneficiary participation, and report field-level concerns and progress to the Project Manager. The position will also promote inclusive participation and support the monitoring and documentation of WASH activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct community meetings and awareness sessions on WASH objectives, hygiene practices, and project activities.
• Promote safe water handling, storage, sanitation, handwashing, and other key hygiene practices.
• Conduct hygiene promotion sessions and household visits to encourage positive hygiene behaviors.
• Raise community awareness on the prevention of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases.
• Mobilize community members to actively participate in WASH and hygiene promotion activities.
• Engage with community leaders, households, women, and vulnerable groups to promote inclusive participation.
• Identify key hygiene needs, practices, and challenges within targeted communities and report them to the Project Manager.
• Support community assessments, household surveys, data collection, and monitoring of hygiene-related activities.
• Encourage communities to take ownership of hygiene practices and the proper use and maintenance of WASH facilities.
• Support the distribution and proper use of hygiene-related supplies and materials, where required.
• Collect and communicate community feedback, complaints, and concerns related to WASH and hygiene activities.
• Support hygiene promotion campaigns, community events, and awareness activities.
• Ensure the meaningful participation of women, people living with disabilities, and other vulnerable community members in hygiene promotion activities.
• Maintain accurate records of hygiene sessions, household visits, awareness activities, and community feedback.
• Prepare and submit regular weekly and monthly reports to the Project Manager.
• Coordinate closely with other WASH team members to ensure effective implementation of hygiene promotion activities.
• Ensure all activities are implemented in accordance with the approved project plan, WASH standards, and organizational guidelines.
• Perform any other WASH- and hygiene-related duties assigned by the Project Manager.

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in WASH, public health, environmental health, social sciences, development studies, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience in hygiene promotion, WASH, community mobilization, or humanitarian/development projects.
• Practical experience in conducting hygiene promotion sessions, community meetings, household visits, awareness campaigns, and community consultations.
• Good understanding of safe water supply, sanitation, personal hygiene, handwashing, and prevention of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and community mobilization skills.
• Ability to effectively engage with community members, local leaders, women, children, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
• Commitment to accountability, inclusion, community participation, and the Do No Harm principle.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure, independently and as part of a team in challenging field environments.
• Fluency in Pashto and Dari; working knowledge of English is preferred.
• Good computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, email, and internet applications.
• Ability to collect and maintain accurate data, document hygiene promotion activities, and prepare basic field reports.
• Ability to work professionally and respectfully with people regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, race, tribe, or cultural background.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly to targeted communities and project sites.
